As every year, the end of the summer holidays also announces the traditional Schueberfouer, taking place from end of August until the beginning of September and transforming the huge Glacis-field in the city of Luxembourg into a wonderful leisure world with merry-go-rounds, restaurants, market, sweets, etc. for the whole family.

With 2 million annual visitors, the funfair of the city of Luxembourg is one of the major events in Europe!

Dates

The 2011 edition - vintage 671 - starts on Friday 19th august (before Saint Bartholomew) and ends on Wednesday 7th September, Wednesday included.

Over the week, the Schueberfouer opens every day from 12 p.m. till 1 a.m., on Fridays and Saturdays till 2 a.m..

Showmen

At the Glacis field are present 183 showmen and 90 retailers for small wares (Allée Scheffer).

Official Opening

The 671st Schueberfouer will be officially opened on Friday 19th august at 5 p.m. by mayor Paul Helminger cutting the tricolour ribbon. The ceremony will be musically accompanied by the Harmonie Municipale Luxembourg & Limpertsberg which, together with the decorated sheeps will lead the procession.

At 6 p.m. the City Council invites its hosts at the « Restaurant Kugener » for the traditional « Ham a Kuch ». Luxembourg-City mayor Paul Helminger, Janny De Vries, president of the Comité international des festivités de la Schueberfouer 2011 and Roger Pelzer, president of the Association Européenne des Commerçants-Forains asbl, will hold speeches.

Action " lost children - Schueberfouer "

The Police help again - every day - to find lost children and to get the together again with their parents.

• The children, accompanied with their parents, can show up at the Police post at the main entrance of the fair. They will then receive a badge.
• The persons having found a lost child, can call the phone number indicated on this badge.
• The Police will then come to look for the concerned child and will re-accompany him to the Police post before calling the parents.

Entrance Gate at the Rond-Point Schuman

The picture of the entrance gate of 18 x 18 meters with light effects has been created in 2007 by a community of artists under the direction of Rik Van Kerchove and shall be used until 2012. Maintenance- and repair works are done after the structure has been erected.

The firm who is charged with the installation of the gate has all the necessary experience needed and guarantees that the structure responds to all legal security norms.

Information screen

Based on the large success of the past years, this year again, an information screen will be installed at the main entrance near the gate. On this information screen, visitors can view all the needed information about the event and public transports.

Publicity

Anne Mélan from Luxembourg-city designed the poster used to promote the 671st Schueberfouer.

800 posters were distributed in Luxembourg as well as in the neighbour countries.

Beneath 30.000 flyer containing information about P&R, bus schedules, the program and 1.000 reduced posters have been printed. The flyers are distributed by the Luxembourg City Tourist Office, the Office National du Tourisme, different syndicats d'initiatives, the a.s.b.l. "Stemm vun der Strooss", the showmen, and also the Office des fêtes, foires et marchés of the City of Luxembourg.

250 reduced posters with helpful information about public transport are distributed in the busses and on the stations.

In addition to the publicity made by the City of Luxembourg, the Comité international des festivités de la Schueberfouer organizes radio- and TV-spots so as games where tickets for the Schueberfouer can be won.

Guichet unique

In order to simplify the administrative demark, the Association Européenne des Commerçants-Forains, the Confédération luxembourgeoise du commerce and the City of Luxembourg have installed the guichet unique which combines in one place different information for showmen like labour legislation, insurance, security or health questions.

Free Nights

6 free nights (opening until 2 a.m.) have been authorized for the Schueberfouer 2011, that's every Friday and Saturday.

Gastronomy

The selling and the quality of food at the Schueberfouer are regularly controlled by officials of the Inspection Sanitaire and the special police units.

Gas

The City of Luxembourg has installed in 2007 a completely new fluid gas system with central tank. The concept has been elaborated in cooperation with the city gas department, the Inspection du Travail et des Mines, Luxcontrol SA and Chauffage Moderne SA. By this way of processing, no security aspect has been neglected. The new system has proved its reliability at the Octave and Schueberfouer since 2007.

The Luxembourg-City gas department does the inspection of the gas installation.

Security

The City of Luxembourg has signed a contract with a specialized firm in order to inspect all the attractions, the rides, the restaurants, the booths, and the infrastructures (gate, container, electricity- and water distribution). A final inspection of the commission des fêtes takes place on august 18th.

According to a call for tender, a security company was retained to make the necessary surveillance on the various sites of the city.

To facilitate the understanding of the legislation in hygiene, health and in safety at work, a " guide of the good practices " in French and in German is distributed to all the storekeepers and showmen. This guide was realized in collaboration with the City of Luxembourg, the Inspection du Travail et des Mines, the Ministry of Health and the Police grand - ducale.
